The Film Detective is Bringing the Comfort of Classic Movies to These Uncertain Times with Marathons Dedicated to Charlie Chaplin, Roger Corman's 94th Birthday and April Fools' Day

The Film Detective Steps into Spring on the Lighter Side with an Entire Month Dedicated to Classic Comedy
ROCKPORT, Mass.March 31, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- The Film Detective (TFD), a classic media streaming network and film archive that restores classic films for today's cord-cutters, is offering a brief escape from these challenging times with the light-hearted side of classic film and television.
Starting on April 1, TFD is featuring a collection of classic comics on its live channel and adding over a dozen comedies to its streaming library of over 1,000 classic film and television titles. April Fools' Day will showcase Golden Age's favorite goofs, including The Three Stooges, Buster Keaton, and Abbott and Costello, for 24 hours of laughs on Sling, STIRR, and DistroTV.
It wouldn't be a month of classic comedy without Charlie Chaplin, so The Film Detective is honoring the anniversary of The Little Tramp's birthday on April 16. Favorites including The Kid (1921) and The Adventurer (1917) will be featured, as well as the tale of Chaplin's rise to fame in Chaplin's Art of Comedy (1966) from legendary independent filmmaker Sam Sherman. Chaplin's birthday will be followed by a weekend-long marathon of comedy from April 17-19. In times when everyone could use a laugh, no one fits the bill like Charlie Chaplin and his comedic peers of yesteryear.
Comedy marathons are only part of the events on The Film Detective this month. To celebrate the 94th birthday of film legend Roger Corman on April 5, TFD is featuring a Roger Cor-Marathon from 3:30 p.m. ET-midnightA Bucket of Blood (1959), The Little Shop of Horrors (1960) and more will be featured to the delight of Corman fans. Viewers can enjoy exclusive commentary on Corman's classics from director Joe Dante and Roger Corman himself in Trailers from Hell videos, available on the TFD app. Additionally, in honor of Easter on April 12, TFD will be stocking its streaming app with religious titles from The Cathedral Films Collection and The Loyola Films Collection, courtesy of Vision Video.
While the theaters may be closed and many confined at home, one thing that offers a bit of respite in times of overwhelming news is the nostalgia of classic film and television. For more information on The Film Detective's April schedule, visit https://www.thefilmdetective.com/.

Coronavirus Is Accelerating Pluto TV’s Already Massive Growth

If there’s one category other than cannabis and toilet paper that’s doing pretty well right now, it’s streaming. But the ad-supported video-on-demand (AVOD) platform was already growing at a rapid clip before the coronavirus outbreak caused streaming consumption to surge. Other networks agree. In February, Comcast bought Xumo for a reported $100 million. Last week, Fox Corporation spent $440 million on its acquisition of Tubi.

Here is a very interesting article featuring a Q&A with CEO and Co-Founder of Pluto TV, Tom Ryan.

https://www.adexchanger.com/tv-and-video/coronavirus-is-accelerating-pluto-tvs-already-massive-growth/?utm_campaign=Feed%3A%2Bad-exchange-news%2B%28AdExchanger.com%3A%2BExchanging%2BIdeas%2BOn%2BDigital%2BMedia%2BOptimization%29&utm_medium=feed&utm_source=feedburner

Although the article is very informative, it is important to note that the channel line up it describes is the USA region of Pluto TV. Channel selection and content will vary considerably in Canada, UK and other territories. The article is still worth the read, though.

New TV Classics Coming to Comet TV and Charge!

NEW TV CLASSICS COMING TO COMET TV AND CHARGE!

Comet TV, the digital over-the-air network in the US, is teasing a new programming line-up on Comet TV and its sister channel Charge! on Twitter this week. Here is a compilation of the ad campaign:

Looking over the daily schedule for Comet TV starting on April 6, it appears that they've reduced their movie block down to 4 hours, expanding their classic series line-up as such (all times US Eastern Time Zone):
  • 10a-12p Noon: Movie
  • 12p-2p: Movie
  • 2p-4p: The Outer Limits (2 episodes back-to-back)
  • 4p-6p: NEW! Sliders (2 episodes back-to-back)
  • 6p-8p: NEW! Quantum Leap (2 episodes back-to-back)
  • 8p-10p: NEW! Battlestar Galactica (2003) (2 episodes back-to-back)
  • 10p-1a: Stargate: SG1 (3 episodes back-to-back)
  • 1a-4a: Babylon 5 (3 episodes back-to-back)
Over at Charge!, the weekly schedule is robust with classic action TV shows. While the movie blocks seem to have been relegated to the weekends, the following shows are taking over the weekday slots (all times US Eastern Time Zone):
  • 10a-1p: NEW! Magnum P.I. (3 episodes back-to-back)
  • 1p-4p: NEW! Knight Rider (3 episodes back-to-back)
  • 4p-7p: CHiPs (3 episodes back-to-back)
  • 7p-10p: Walker, Texas Ranger (3 episodes back-to-back)*
  • 10p-1a: Magnum P.I. (3 episodes back-to-back) [Repeat of the 10a-1p block]
  • 1a-4a: Walker, Texas Ranger (3 episodes back-to-back)*
*NOTE: Walker, Texas Ranger is not available on CHARGE! online streaming. We apologize for the inconvenience.

I am so glad to see that there will be no overlap of the new shows-- start on Charge! at 10a for the new Magnum/KR run, then flip over to Comet at 4pm to catch the debuts of the Sliders/QL/Galactica run. Mark your calendars, the new line-up starts on April 6, 2020!

How to watch Star Trek: Picard for FREE in Canada and the USA!

Yesterday I posted that Crave TV, the streaming home of Star Trek: Picard in Canada, is offering 30 days free of their streaming service, expanding their free trial period from 7 days. This offer comes just in time for the Thursday drop of the Season 1 finale of the hit show from the US streamer, CBS All Access (which is not the same CBS All Access that we have here in Canada).

Today, via his Instagram account, Sir Patrick Stewart announced that CBS All Access in the US will also offer 30 days free of its service to allow fans to stream Picard from the beginning. Here is a snapshot of the announcement:

In the post, Stewart writes:

Verified

It's felt good to bring Picard back.

Our #StarTrekPicard season finale is Thursday, and starting today until 4/23, you can watch for free on @CBSAllAccess in the US with the code: GIFT. Link in bio to sign up.

If you are in the USA and you want to sign up for the free trial, use the promo code GIFT. The code will work for both versions of CBS All Access, with limited commercials (normally $5.99 per month), and commercial free (normally $9.99 per month).

Canadians please note: The promo code will not work with CBS All Access in Canada as it is operated completely differently from its American counterpart. Should you choose to subscribe to CBS All Access (Canada), you will not find Star Trek: Picard there (and several other familiar CBS titles) due to it's licensing agreement with Bell Media, parent company of Crave TV.

Cordcutter service SimeTV Live to end service on March 31, 2020

I just got an email today from SimeTV:
Your subscription will end on
March 31, 2020
As of March 31st, 2020 SiMeTV will no longer be offering TV services.
Please enjoy the remainder of your subscription, however after March 31st, 2020 you will no longer have access and billing will be discontinued.
I wasn't watching much of this service, but SimeTV was a great "budget" service in Canada (for $10-bucks a month it gave us all of the major Canadian networks, and several US OTA-type channels). I had written an extensive "honest review" about this service previously, but it always looked like this was one of those "grey market" services that hadn't really explained their legality to anyone's satisfaction. Maybe that caught up with them.
Interestingly, their website recently showed a price-hike to $12.99/month instead of the $9.99/m I signed up for a few months back. More intriguing is that their site is now offering a "free" sign up, but does not display any pricing at all.
Too bad. SimeTV had its flaws, but the service was priced right and had lots of promise to be a very good service for Canadian cord-cutters.
What's your opinion about this news? Do you have any experiences to share about SiMeTV? Leave a comment below!

Pesonal Message: Branding management and a bit of housekeeping...

Good day, frugal streamers around the world! Just a bit of an update today...

As I was reviewing how things were going with this blog and other social media I was managing for it, I quickly discovered a few things that I needed to update and advise about.

Before I set up this blog, The Frugal Streamer on Blogspot, I didn't really do any kind of "due diligence" about the name "The Frugal Streamer". Certainly, the blog name, "thefrugalstreamer.blogspot.com," had not been taken, so I figured I had a clear field to the branding of "The Frugal Streamer"!

Well, it turns out that there is ANOTHER "Frugal Streamer" out there (do a Google search and you might find him fairly quickly) who runs a site with the same name (and Twitter handle) dealing with frugal streaming tools and ideas for podcasters. DANG! So now I had to quickly rethink my branding strategy before my blog catches on beyond a point of no return (or before I get the attention of that 'other guy' lol).

So, first thing I did is delete my old Twitter handle (@frugalstreamer) and now you will find my new Twitter handle to be @StreamOnABudget. (I checked, the name was not taken and wouldn't be confused with anything else on Twitter, I figure, so all should be good! lol) I would love for you all to click the "Follow Me on Twitter" logo in the right sidebar of the blog and follow me!

Secondly, I wanted to make sure that my YouTube Channel (Free2View TV Canada on YouTube) was not conflicting with any other "Free2View" channel there. Again, another whim without really doing proper research. Indeed, there was another "Free2ViewTV", but it has not been active for over 11 years. In fact, this particular "satellite TV" service came out of Africa and appears to be defunct right now. With a bit of googling, their official site now appears to stream from the UK-based FilmOn streaming service. So, I figure I am also safe with keeping my YouTube channel active as it is and just keep growing from there.

Which leaves me with a bit of a dilemma with the blog... I am not associated with that 'other guy' I mentioned earlier, so I basically renamed the blog as "@StreamOnABudget | Canada | Free2View TV", using my new Twitter handle and still in keeping with the "theme" of 'frugal streaming', differentiating myself with the others, and still being able to entertain and inform a growing audience with all things thrifty in the streaming / cord-cutting universe.

I hope you all stick with me as I continue cleaning things up here at the @StreamOnABudget / The Frugal Streamer (Canada) / Free2View TV blog. I would love to read any comments, feedback and suggestions that you may have!

Until next time, Happy Streaming! -GB.
