CBC Launches Free Streaming Channel CBC News Explore On All Major Streaming Platforms In Canada

November 30, 2022 — CBC today launched CBC NEWS EXPLORE, a free 24/7 ad-supported streaming (FAST) channel offering audiences a new way to discover CBC News. The new channel features video journalism that takes a step away from breaking news to explain and explore beyond the headlines, alongside a curated selection of local, national and current affairs features. Original programs include ABOUT THAT hosted by Andrew Chang, a daily half-hour show that takes a closer look at the biggest stories of the day.

The free CBC NEWS EXPLORE stream is available on a growing number of digital and connected TV platforms including CBC Gem, the CBC News App, CBCNews.ca and The Roku Channel (channel 105 in Canada), with more to be added soon. CBC NEWS NETWORK remains CBC’s 24-hour premium service  for live-and-breaking news, available through cable and satellite providers and on CBC Gem.

“Today's launch of CBC News Explore marks an important moment in our evolution, ensuring we will be able to serve more people across Canada whenever, wherever or however they choose to consume our content,” said Susan Marjetti, General Manager of CBC News, Current Affairs and Local. “As Canada’s public broadcaster, it is important we are there for people with trusted news and information 24/7 on their platform of choice whether radio, TV, digital or via a streaming channel like this one.”

“While some focus on traditional TV audience numbers as the only measure of success, the real story of how a news organization reaches and grows its audience today is much more complex,” said Brodie Fenlon, Editor in Chief, CBC News in an Editor’s Blog. “Streaming audiences in Canada are sizable and growing, and hungry for high-quality, fact-based video journalism — just not in the places we’ve traditionally offered TV news. We won’t treat them as an afterthought. While CBC News Network remains our premium live-and-breaking news service, CBC News Explore is an important part of our future to serve Canadians on the platform of their choice.”

CBC NEWS EXPLORE Original Programs:

  • ABOUT THAT - Now streaming weekdays (x 30 mins) at 11 a.m. ET (repeats 4 p.m.and 7 p.m. ET).

Andrew Chang delves deeper into daily news by expanding our understanding of the stories everybody's talking about, featuring a blend of frank conversation, explainers and feature interviews.

  • THIS WEEK IN CANADA - Now streaming Wednesdays (x 30 min) at 11:30 a.m. ET (repeats 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. ET).

This weekly program is a destination for original stories that showcase the heart of local communities in Canada, featuring video journalism from local CBC News stations from coast to coast to coast to help audiences better understand how the headlines are affecting people across the country.

  • PLANET WONDER - Now streaming new episodes monthly (6 x 30 mins) on Tuesdays 11:30 a.m. ET (repeats at 4:30 p.m ET).

Meteorologist Johanna Wagstaffe explores the natural world and the impact of our changing climate with unbridled curiosity and a hands-on approach to better understand the urgent consequences of a warming planet. Wagstaffe isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty (or actually eat dirt) in her search for genuine solutions. She asks surprising questions and connects different perspectives as she wanders, and sometimes stumbles, through forests, across oceans, up mountains, into laboratories and down some fascinating rabbit holes.

  • BIG: CBC News Original Documentary series - premieres Wednesday Nov 30 at 12 p.m. ET (repeats  8 p.m. ET) with new episodes available monthly (4 x 60 mins).

This original documentary series exposes industries that impact the everyday lives of Canadians in hidden ways, drawing on unseen archival footage that connects the dots between the news stories that dominate the headlines and our social media feeds. Candid interviews with insider experts shed light on the powerful players gaming the biggest and most culturally influential industries, from the digital music industry’s monopoly over our culture; to dating apps that use our own hearts against us; to the true crime entertainment phenomenon that is influencing our actual justice system.

Lou Neglia has a track record of bringing to the World of Mixed Martial Arts evenings that live long in the memory but very few (if any) quite like this with such and amazing array of fighters taking part.

Ring of Combat began with one simple concept, to give mixed martial art (MMA) fighters a platform to showcase their talent and dedication. Owned by former three-time world kickboxing champion, Lou Neglia, Ring of Combat began to pave the way for east coast MMA with its first event held October 12th, 2002 in Uncasville, Connecticut. Now in Atlantic City, New Jersey, the Tournaments and the standard of participants have begun to reach to even newer and dizzier heights.

Today, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) has risen from obscurity to widely considered to be the fastest growing sport in the world. Lou realized from his own experience that fighters would need to work their way to the top and firmly believed, tough fights make great fighters. Lou’s keen eye for talent has helped to groom some of the best fighters on the planet and Ring of Combat 78 is no exception.

Available to view on a variety of TV Channels (see below) Ring of Combat 78 promises to be an evening that very few if any will ever forget.

The New Google Chromecast with Google TV on Sale At Biggest Discount Since Launch; Must Install Free TV Apps After You Buy

The New Google Chromecast with Google TV is less than two months old and already Google is selling it at its lowest discount since it launched. If you delayed buying the new HD device when it launched on September 23rd, now is your chance to get it for as low as US$19.99 / CA$29.99 at all major retailers and online including the official Google Store and on Amazon.*

*If you buy on Amazon through the affiliate links in our post, we get paid a commission for your purchase and it helps keeps the lights on here at @StreamOnABudget. Your support also helps fund continued development of our official endeavors at the StreamOnABudget Showcase Project, including our new Roku app, the StreamOnABudget Showcase FREE channel on Roku!

If you've already bought and installed your new Google Chromecast with Google TV and looking for some great apps to put on it, check out a few of my favorites:

PLEX - Perhaps the Go-To app to stream dozens of live TV channels and thousands of ad-supported movies and TV episodes, make sure this app is front and center in "Your apps". I am a fan of classic/vintage TV and movies and cult cinema, and I've been watching a lot of The Film Detective, Kino Cult and the recently launched Scream! Factory TV, a 24/7 cult horror channel from the makers of Shout! Factory TV. Kino Cult has a standalone Google TV app which is worth checking out if you are a fan, with hundreds of genre movies and TV shows on demand and their live linear channel as well.

CLASSIC RERUNS TV - This recent newcomer within the last couple of years is finding its way to many over-the-air affiliates in the US as well as some of the most popular streaming platforms. On this app you'll find all the great favorite TV reruns of the '50s and '60s that you would expect in such a place, but the Google TV version of the app does not stream their live linear channel. (If you have a Roku, you can find the live channel in their own standalone app on Roku. Full disclosure, we also have the live network streaming on our own live TV app on Roku.) The live stream for Classic Reruns TV is available through Distro TV that you install on your Google Chromecast with Google TV device.

CINEHOUSE - If you are in Canada, you won't be able to get Cinedigm Corps. CINEVERSE service right now, so the next best thing is a free ad-supported app called Cinehouse. It carries many of the popular art-house, cult and classic entertainment linear channels you might expect on other platforms including the Cineverse movie channel, a true crime channel called Crime Hunters, and genre networks like Midnight Pulp. Hundreds of ad-supported movies and TV shows are also available to binge any time.

If none of these apps suit your tastes, you can always scroll over to Apps on your Google TV device and check out any of the hundreds of apps available from app categories such as Entertainment, Lifestyle, Sports and more. -Georges Brunet
