CBC Gem in Canada Embracing Free Streaming Channels for Local News and Comedy Shows

CBC is set to launch more free streaming channels including one dedicated to comedy and several focused on local news.

TORONTO - CBC announced plans Thursday to launch more free streaming channels including one dedicated to comedy and several focused on local news as it dives deeper into online options favoured by younger audiences.

While announcing its fall/winter lineup the public broadcaster said two ad-driven streamers will debut this fall with 2024 expected to see more free, ad-supported television, or FAST channels. They join CBC News Explore, which premiered last November to offer a deeper dive into current affairs and news topics.

CBC Comedy will offer a constant feed of CBC series, sketch comedy and standup specials including current episodes of “Run the Burbs,” “Son of a Critch” and “Sort Of,” as well as past seasons of defunct shows “Kim’s Convenience,” “Schitt’s Creek” and “Baroness Von Sketch Show.”

CBC News BC will stream local news from the West Coast and be the first of multiple local news streamers planned for connected TVs, the CBC News App and CBC Gem.

“We’re looking to launch a couple more that are more regionalized, localized and potentially over time, continue to launch more and more and more of those,” said CBC executive vice-president Barbara Williams.

“They’re pretty straightforward. They’re pretty easy to launch. The younger demo that doesn’t necessarily have a cable subscription still really enjoy the lean-back streaming experience and they’re discovering FAST channels of all types on their connected TVs and other devices.”

CBC announced the plans alongside its upcoming programming lineup for the main network and CBC Gem, much of which won’t land until winter 2024.

Additions set for the new year include the workplace comedy “One More Time” from comedian D.J. Demers, the police series “Allegiance,” the Vancouver-set procedural “Wild Cards,” and the reality competition “The Great Canadian Pottery Throw Down.”

Williams said the lineup reflects a heavy investment in nurturing new talent and finding new voices.

“(We’re) constantly thinking about: ‘Whose voice are we not hearing from? What story are we missing? What story is not being told by the, maybe, traditional broadcasters? Who doesn’t have access to be able to tell their story?” she said.

New this fall are previously announced extended versions of two feature films, reimagined for the small screen: the five-part Indigenous residential school saga “Bones of Crows,” and three-part tech series “BlackBerry.”

They join returning fall series “Sort Of,” “This Hour Has 22 Minutes,” “Heartland,” “Murdoch Mysteries” and “SkyMed.”

“Run the Burbs” and “Son of A Critch” are set to return in winter 2024.

Returning reality fare this fall includes “Best in Miniature,” “Dragons’ Den,” “Family Feud Canada,” “The Great Canadian Baking Show” and “Still Standing,” with reality series set for 2024 including “Bollywed,” “Canada’s Ultimate Challenge,” “Push” and “Stuff the British Stole.”

New fall documentary series include “Black Life: Untold Stories” and “Swan Song,” billed as a character-driven series following Karen Kain’s final year with the National Ballet of Canada.

The winter doc lineup includes new series “For the Culture with Amanda Parris” in which the broadcaster hosts conversations that centre Blackness and “The Nature of Things,” which welcomes new hosts Sarika Cullis-Suzuki and Anthony Morgan.

The summer lineup includes third seasons of “Moonshine” and “Race Against the Tide,” both returning July 16.

Williams said the broadcaster is focused on ensuring audiences can find the best of CBC, no matter the platform, and to “have everything, everywhere.”

Over the past year, Canadians have streamed more than 34 million hours of content on CBC Gem, she said. More than half of those viewers watched on a connected television, such as a smart TV or one connected to a streaming device such as Apple TV or Roku.

“If people’s choice is, ‘I just want Gem,’ we want to be sure as much as possible that everything is there for them,” said Williams.

“If people just really want a cable subscription, we want to be sure that TV and (CBC) News Network is there for them and the Documentary Channel. If people really are just, ‘I’m only interested in mobile, just give me dot-ca and give me the news app,’ then guess what — you can find Explore on the (CBC) News app.”

New short-form series headed to CBC Gem this fall include six 10-minute episodes of “The Bannocking,” about a journalism student who returns home to uncover the truth about the abandoned residential school; eight episodes of the 15-minute “How to Fail as a Popstar,” an adaptation of Vivek Shraya’s hit play and book about “a young queer brown boy, growing up in Edmonton trying to achieve pop stardom;” and six 15-minute episodes of “I Hate People, People Hate Me,” billed as an offbeat comedy that explores queer identity.

Just a personal note about our marketing affiliations

Good day, fellow readers and Streamers On A Budget!

(Updated 6/06/23) by Georges Brunet, Chief Editor of the @StreamOnABudget blog.

So, the other day, I received bad news about my Amazon US (dot com) affiliation, and, well, for some reason that really isn't too clear to me, I had lost the affiliation with Amazon US. I appealed, and unfortunately got no results from it. The reason for the disassociation of the affiliation is still unclear to me, though I have a general idea that it *may* be because of the universal linking I was doing through GeniusLink (https://geniuslink.com/pricing?v=a76t3) (even though the support pages for GeniusLink indicate that it's perfectly safe to use them). I am not sure that's exactly the reason, but I am changing my affiliate strategy to safeguard against that happening, just in case.

Just as a follow up to this post written a few weeks ago, I had set up a new Affiliate account with Amazon (dot com), and it had cited it could not continue with that affiliation either because of previous affiliations that violated their Operating Agreement (which is still, frankly, unclear to me).

That being said, I have a new Amazon US affiliation pending approval, so I am encouraged that I will be able to get back in business offering the best deals in Streaming and overall Entertainment for our dear readers in the United States. The Canadian Amazon affiliation we have here remains unchanged, but you shall now see affiliate links for products in their respective territories instead of using universal links from GeniusLink. (Sorry GeniusLink.)

UPDATE: Regrettably, I won't be using any affiliate links from Amazon (dot com), which, unfortunately, will make trying to monetize my endeavors a lot more difficult, for much of the support for streaming and cordcutting comes from an American audience. That being said, Canadian readers are out there in full force as Cordcutting in Canada takes hold, I hope you all will still continue to support the endeavors of the @StreamOnABudget #Showcase FREE channel on Roku and the StreamOnABudget Showcase Project overall.

Any Amazon US affiliates that you find linked in any of the StreamOnABudget posts prior to last week may be invalid or unavailable, but should not prevent you from shopping Amazon US anyways. Let me suggest that US shoppers update your bookmarks with this link (click here: https://www.amazon.com/ref=nav_logo?tag=atstreamon4us-20), which embeds our affiliate ID in the link, so that we can get credit for the times you're going to shop on Amazon anyways.  UPDATE: Direct-to-Amazon links will still be referenced whenever possible, for the convenience of our US readers, but we SHALL NOT PROVIDE affiliate links, as hoped. Instead, I am working on some other marketing/merchandizing ideas that I hope will help supplement support for our projects.

To our readers in Canada, shopping through our affiliate links really does help to keep the lights on at the StreamOnABudget Showcase Project (including this blog and all our various entertainment endeavors, such as the StreamOnABudget Showcase FREE app on Roku -- click here for more information on that, and digital download packages that are coming soon).

As always, check out the sidebar of this blog for all the many ways you can reach out to me, but you can find me in our Facebook group often every day, check us out!

Thank you for sparing a moment of your time and thank you for being a part of our community!

Sirius XM's Listen Free Event is Back Through June 5 on Inactive Radios and Online

SiriusXM Giving 2 Week Free Preview of Its World of Content Starting Thursday, May 25

Celebrate summer with music from your favorite genres and artists, live sports, the best in talk, and more — all playing on your car radio, wherever you roll.

by Georges Brunet, Chief Editor of the @StreamOnABudget blog.

SiriusXM published information about their semi-annual Listen Free Event on their website today, set to begin during the early overnight hours Thursday morning, May 25th.

As is usually the custom of the event twice a year (usually during the US Memorial weekend in May and around the Christmas Holiday season when they showcase their seasonal stations), SiriusXM will make its wide array of content available for free on both its satellite and streaming platform.

SiriusXM content will be available for free for a limited time from May 25th to June 5th for anyone with an inactive satellite radio, or who has an internet connected mobile device and/or web access. Any non-subscriber in the United States and Canada can tune in to sample SiriusXM seamlessly, without any registration requirements. The app itself delivers expanded programming, greater discovery, more intuitive recommendations and SiriusXM Video.

That means access to hundreds of curated music, talk and sports channels (and my personal favorite-- the Big 80's on 8-- am I dating myself?) are all easily available during this free listening period. Upcoming NOST TV Sharing New Schedule and Sizzle Reel to Distributors

NOST: The Nostalgia Network shares sneak peek of their new schedule and launch promo for their network launching on April 3rd.

The upcoming network, NOST TV: The Nostalgia Network, has begun sharing their new network assets including a PDF schedule and a sizzle reel trailer to their channel distributors.

The vintage nostalgia TV and movie network, Classic Reruns TV, announced last week that they are rebranding as NOST TV on Monday, April 3, 2023, this upcoming Monday.

Here is a graphic of the general schedule that the network sent along to its distributors:

NOST TV also shared a brand-new 30-second TV spot that is airing on all of the current Classic Reruns TV channels around the country:

The new NOST TV: The Nostalgia Network will be available in several over-the-air TV markets in the US, streaming in Canada on the River TV service, and for FREE online. It is expected that the NOST website will offer their stream for everyone for free, but it will also stream through the most popular streaming apps, and worldwide through the StreamOnABudget Showcase FREE channel on Roku.

NOST The Nostalgia Network Streaming Soon, Available In Canada

by Georges Brunet, Chief Editor of the @StreamOnABudget blog.

On Wednesday, Classic Reruns TV announced via their Facebook page that their network will be rebranding as NOST: The Nostalgia Network. The social media post read:

"Breaking TV News! On Monday, April 3rd Classic Reruns TV becomes NOST: The Nostalgia Network. Time-honored feature films, all the time. And a few snazzy sitcoms in the mix for good measure. You should tell everybody."

The announcement was accompanied with a 45-second trailer, which is now posted on the YouTube channel for StreamOnABudget:

Here are the highlights of what's expected to be airing during NOST TV's first week of broadcast in April:

Sample List of Movies
  • True Grit
  • Road to (series of movies)
  • Rio Lobo
  • Planet of the Apes (series of movies)
  • It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad World
  • 2001: A Space Odyssey
  • Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory
  • Star Trek: The Motion Picture
  • The Great Escape
  • The Producers
  • Lawrence of Arabia
  • Blue Hawaii
This is an impressive list of movies coming soon, and it is also expected that NOST TV will continue with its usual slate of classic TV series filling out the daily schedule.

It was also announced on Tuesday via Facebook that the very popular Indie hosted horror show, Lord Blood-rah's Nerve Wrackin' Theater, will air on Saturday nights on the network, competing directly against another major hosted horror movie show on another OTA network.

It is expected that NOST TV will stream worldwide, as does its Classic Reruns TV network, and that it will be a mere rebranding of the network on all of it's over-the-air affiliates in the US and streaming services worldwide.

Nostalgia themed networks have become very popular with recent cord-cutters, so this rebranding feels like the right, natural transition to make for this network. Classic Reruns TV is the most popular channel streaming currently on our own StreamOnABudget Showcase FREE channel on Roku and there is no doubt that NOST TV will be even more popular and a natural fit for the platform.
